ABSTRACT

Association between serve with defense, and defense with the counter-attack on female basis categories volleyball

Objective: Associate serve with defense and counter-attack, and defense with counter-attack, according to the success on the set in female basis categories volleyball. Methods: A total of 2960 actions of 16 games were analyzed, with 1611 serve, 870 defenses and 479 counter-attack. An association was verified using the Chi-square test. Results and discussion: The serve was associated with the defense in the set won and lost (X²= 83.938, p<0.000; X²= 123.473, p<0.000, respectively), between serve and counter-attack, there wasn’t any association (X²= 15.071, p= 0.058), however there was an association in the set lost (X²= 17.844, p= 0.022). The defense was associated with the counter-attack, both in the won set (X²= 65.644, p<0.001) and in the lost set (X²= 57.886, p<0.001), furthermore, the excellent defenses showed more than expected frequency of points, only in the won set (3,7). Conclusion: The serve seems to be a guiding element for a construction of the defensive organization of the team’s independent of the result of the set, since, a quality of defense increases as possibilities of winning points of counterattack.
