Abstract

Introduction and aim: Pregnancy hyperglycemia is a very common health complication in pregnancy and is associated with increased maternal-fetal morbidity and long-term complications for mother and child. Movement behavior (domains and intensities of physical activity and sedentary behavior) has a direct impact on possible negative maternal-fetal outcomes associated with hyperglycemia in pregnancy. The objective of this experience report is to describe the intervention of physical education in a high-risk prenatal service for hyperglycemia. Materials and methods: The patient underwent detailed anamnesis and evaluation by the 6-minute walk test and Clinical Global Impressions Scale in reassessments. Individualized counseling for unsupervised walking was performed, according to the five A's concept, and exercise time and subjective perception of effort were recorded. Results and discussion: Regular exercise, associated with guidance to discourage sedentary behavior, was able to improve the patient's glycemic profile, functional capacity, and weight control. Conclusion: An exercise counseling program may serve as a protective factor for the maternal-fetal binomial in pregnant women with hyperglycemia during pregnancy.
