Effects of premenstrual syndrome on pysical activity of university students of physical education in Rio de Janeiro
Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the effects of the Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) in students from under graduation courses in Physical Education of an university based in Rio de Janeiro, who pratice regular physical activity or not, indentifying the morbity index (wich was considered the percentage of female with the disease), the most severe symptons that affect women in question and the opinion about PMS whether interferes in the same physical activities. The sample consisted of 129 students, whose ages ranged between 17 and 46 years, all in childbearing age. The research was classified as a survey using a questionaire to ascertain PMS effects, age, main symptoms and self-assessment of the disease. Additionally, this study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Gama Filho University. The data from the inquiry were analized and reported then suggesting that most students are affected by PMS and the morbity index was found to be high, but in agreement with the literature. Moreover, the most common symptoms were irritability and colics. In the opinion of the respondents, the PMS affected the pratice of physical activities. Self-assessment was also surveyed showing a higher percentage of women who, in their opinion, suffer from the disease.
