The effect of relative age on the selection of athletes in team sports games

Abstract

The objective of this study was to verify the EIR in the selection of athletes in different Collective Sports Games according to the sex, in clubs and sports teams of the State of Santa Catarina. A total of 360 athletes participated in the study, of which 217 (60.3%) were males, with a mean age of 20.9 (± 5.23) years, of field, futsal, handball and basketball modalities. Socio-demographic, economic and sports indicators were obtained through a self-administered questionnaire. To verify the relative age, the annual calendar was used, dividing the year into quartiles. The analysis of the results howed a higher percentage of athletes born in the first quartile, however the EIR was verified only in the field soccer athletes, and for the athletes of basketball was observed a tendency to appear. There was a higher concentration of male athletes born in the first semester, in females this association was not significant. It is observed that th elevel of competitiveness of the sport can bean important factor in the favoring of the EIR in sports categorized by age. In addition, greater caution and attention are needed for male athletes, especially in sports with higher competition levels.
