Hydrostatic effects of immersion on intraocular pressure of swimmers
Abstract
Purpose: To verify the hydrostatic pressure (HP) effect on the intraocular pressure (IOP) of swimmers. Method: Experimental descriptive study were the swimming pool temperature was kept by 32°C. All the 33 volunteers, 18 women and 15 men, aging from 18 till 36 years old, had their IOP measured by the same Ophthalmologist using Perkins® tonometer in 4 moments: i) 15 minutes seated outside the swimming pool; ii) 15 minutes inside the swimming pool with water at knee's line; iii) 15 minutes inside the swimming pool with water at hip's line; iv) 15 minutes inside the swimming pool with water at the shoulder's line. Results: We found no statistical difference (ANOVA analysis) among the studied groups. Conclusion: There was no significant change on IOP during the swimmers's body immersion in different water levels and under swimming pool temperature kept on 32°C.
