Correlation between the six-minute walk test and the AQ20 in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Abstract
Introducion: The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can modified the activities of daily living (ADL) from individuals, and consequently the Quality of Life (QL). The 6-minutes walk test (6MWT) it is a good predictor of functional capacity. Quality of life assessment is important for understanding the limitations of COPD patients. Aim: To verify the correlation of functional capacity by the 6MWT in quality of life by the airway questionnaire in individuals with COPD. Materials and Methods: The study was performed with 20 patients with COPD, attend in Pulmonary Disease Nucleus from Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal do Maranhão (HU-UFMA). It was applied the quality of life questionnaire (AQ20), and performed the 6-minutes walk test (6MWT). It was used the Shapiro-Wilk test and Pearson correlation. All the analysis were performed on computational softwares SPSS1.0 and Sigma Plot 12.0. The adopted value was p<0.05. Results: It was find the value r=0.457, p=0.04. Indicating negative correlation, inverse and significant to the values of AQ20 and 6MWT. Discussion: The low score of quality of life can be associated to difficulties imposed by disease, as well as the dyspnoea, and the functional limitation. These limitations also make it difficult the low-resistance activities, like 6-MWT. Conclusion: Based on the found results, it can be concluded that it were moderated correlation, negative between the 6-minutes walk test and the quality of life by AQ20. For that matter, it is confirmed the hypothesis from this study. However, the limitations of COPD directly influence the perception of quality of life.
