Lifestyle and mental health of adolescents in the Joaçaba microregion
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the lifestyle and mental health of adolescents in the Joaçaba microregion. This is a quantitative cross-sectional epidemiological study. The sample consisted of 1,769 adolescents aged 12 to 15 years, of which 844 (47.71%) were female and 925 (52.29%) were male. Data were collected through questionnaires. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - HAD (Botega et al., 1995) was used to measure symptoms of depression and anxiety. The self-administered questionnaire Fantastic Lifestyle, proposed by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP, 1994), was used to verify lifestyle. The mean, standard deviation and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis, considering p<0.05. Regarding lifestyle, 359 adolescents were found with a classification of needs improvement and poor. On the other hand, 1,410 adolescents were classified as good, very good and excellent. In anxiety symptoms, 374 adolescents were identified as having a probable outcome and 219 adolescents were identified as having depression symptoms. Adolescents who were classified as having a lifestyle that needs improvement demonstrated the highest mean scores for anxiety and depression symptoms, with 11.5 and 10.86 points, respectively. For both anxiety and depression, the results were significant when compared with lifestyle (p<0.05). In the Joaçaba microregion, adolescents have a high frequency of anxiety and depression symptoms and a significant relationship with lifestyle, raising concerns about the future of these adolescents in relation to their health.References
