Abstract

When practicing sports for children and adolescents, it is important to observe growth and maturation factors, as they are elements that can predict the sporting success of the future athlete. Therefore, the present study had the following objectives: a) compare the motor performance and anthropometric characteristics of sports children and adolescents in the city of Maputo at different maturational stages; b) verify the joint relative contribution of anthropometric characteristics, chronological age and biological maturation in the motor performance indicators of sports children and adolescents in the city of Maputo. 204 male athletes from the city of Maputo were evaluated. The comparison of the different maturational stages was carried out using one-factor analysis of variance (somatic maturation stage), with the dependent variables of all measurements taken and Scheffé's “post-hoc” test was applied to locate statistically significant differences. Therefore, it was found that anthropometric and physical performance values are statistically significant in relation to maturational statuses except sitting and reaching and abdominal exercises. On the other hand, it was found that there is a correlation between chronological age and motor performance measures. It can be concluded that athletes belonging to the most advanced maturational stages presented high values of anthropometric indicators and motor performance.
