Test efficiency timed up and go in the prediction of falls in elderly assisted in a basic health unit in Fortaleza-CE
Abstract
Ageing is a natural and irreversible process, characterized in that a number of modifications multifactorial. Among these, the decrease in body balance is one of the most important involved as directly influences the implementation of the various activities of daily life conducted by the elderly. This change makes the individual more exposed to occurrence of disabling events such as falls. The study aimed to verify the efficiency of the timed up and go test the prediction of falls in elderly patients in aprimary care unit of Fortaleza-CE. The sample included 55 elderly people recruited from the unit's answering service. According the results 16.4% of respondents reported having suffered falls in the last 30 days, and when performed the test results showed that the average time of the elderly in the test was 12.58 seconds, which according to the classification the test is a low risk of falls. We conclude that the test "timed up and go" proved to be efficient in predicting the occurrence of falls in the elderly, revealing, an inexpensive instrument that can be applied in the elderly to evaluate the functional capacity. It is recommended to use the test in the control and prevention of falls in the elderly, which can mean a significant improvement in quality of life of this population and to reduce costs in the health system.
