Effects of whey protein supplementation during strength training in lean mass: a systematic review
Abstract
Introduction: The maintenance of lean body mass has been highlighted in the literature for their contribution on quality of life onindividuals, important not only in locomotion as well as metabolism. Nutritional strategies have been adopted in order to cause significant increases in lean mass of practitioners of strength training. One such strategy relates to the supplementation of whey protein. Nevertheless term studies show efficacy with this type of intervention, this topic remains obscured. Objective: Verify the effects of whey supplementation during strength training in lean mass. Literature Review: This was a systematic review in which were included only randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials found in PUBMED database that met the established criteria. Eight trials were included in this analysis. Six trials showed no significant differences in the increase in lean body mass between the group supplemented with whey and placebo. The discrepancy in results may be attributed to the large number of factors inherent in the long term protocols which involve the maintenance of lean body mass. Conclusion: Strength training is an essential stimulus for lean mass gains could occur and the maintenance of adequacy nutritional state increase this adaptations. Nevertheless, actual scientific evidence suggest that whey supplementation in young during strength training do not show superiority compared to others protein sources or carbohydrates.
